Are you aware of the U.S. gun statistics?

I've thought about the "What ifs"...What if my family needed protection? What if someone was trying to attack me or a family member?, etc.

Still considering the options for myself and my family, I've decided to share some of the statistics regarding the percentage of those who own guns and use them to protect their families as compared to the percentage of injuries, suicides and accidental deaths.

Statistics, Facts and Quotes

http://www.ichv.org/Statistics.htm

..."FACT: Contrary to popular belief, young children do possess the physical strength to fire a gun: 25% of 3 to 4 year olds, 70% of 5 to 6 year olds, and 90% of 7 to 8 year olds can fire most handguns."

..."FACT: In 2002, a total of 828 young Americans ages 10-19 committed suicide with firearms, a decrease of 11% from the 2001 total of 928 youth gun suicides. Unlike suicide attempts using other methods, suicide attempts with guns are nearly always fatal, meaning a temporarily depressed teenager will never get a second chance at life. Nearly two-thirds of all completed teenage suicides involve a firearm."

..."FACT: The firearms used in 72% of unintentional firearm deaths and injuries, and in firearm suicide attempts and completions, for people ages 0-19 were stored in the residence of the victim, their relative, or their friend."

..."FACT: 59% of students in grades six through twelve know where to get a gun if they want one, and two thirds of these students say they can acquire a firearm within 24 hours"

..."FACT: While handguns account for only one-third of all firearms owned in the United States, they account for more than two-thirds of all firearm-related deaths each year. A gun in the home is 4 times more likely to be involved in an unintentional shooting, 7 times more likely to be used to commit a criminal assault or homicide, and 11 times more likely to be used to attempt or commit suicide than to be used in self-defense."

There are many differing view points/opinions on gun issues. I have not made up my mind regarding which opinion is correct. I find myself split between protection and the dangers involved in gun ownership.

Coalition for Gun Control (Canada comparing statistics to show that owning guns does not solve crime) http://www.guncontrol.ca/Content/TheCaseForGunControl.html Arming For Self Protection Does not Work "The easiest response to suggestions that Canadian civilians need guns to protect themselves is to look south to the US to see where arming for self protection leads. While rates of violence in the US are comparable to countries such as Canada, Australia and Great Britain, rates of lethal violence are much higher. For example, murders without guns in the US are about 40% higher (1.4 times the rate) than in Canada while murders WITH handguns are 1500% higher (15 times the rate)."

Statistics, Gun Control Issues, and Safety http://library.med.utah.edu/WebPath/TUTORIAL/GUNS/GUNSTAT.html

In my research, I've made a great discovery of alternative gun units where protection is still an option without the use and/or dangers of the standard gun.

Alternate Self-Defense/Protection Options http://www.selfdefensegearco.com/IM5-LauncherSelfProtectionGun.htm "The statistics are staggering: 95,000 rapes reported every year in the U.S., 875,000 assaults, and 400,000 other violent crimes. Choose the most advanced personal safety solution on the market - the Avurt ™ IM-5 ™ gun.
The Avurt IM-5 gun is a small, handheld unit that shoots up to five PAVA filled projectiles at attackers up to 40 feet away. It's non-lethal, easy to use, and highly effective at disabling attackers before they get close enough to do you harm."

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Until the United States says enough is enough; firearms will continue to impose a heavy toll, without fail on the general community.

Controversy has also swirled around Dr. Kellerman's claim that gun availability increases the risk of suicide. Dr. Faria says "the overwhelming available evidence compiled from the psychiatric literature is that untreated or poorly managed depression is the real culprit behind high rates of suicide."

Backing this up is the observation that countries with strict gun control laws and low rates of firearm availability -- such as Japan, Germany and the Scandinavian countries -- have suicide rates that are 2 time to 3 times higher than for the U.S. In these countries, people simply substitute for guns other suicide methods such as Hara-Kiri, carbon monoxide suffocation, hanging, or chemical poisoning.

Dr. Faria also cites the work of Florida State University professor Gary Kleck and Yale University professor John R. Lott Jr. as serious challenges to gun control advocates' claim that guns are a public health problem.

In his books Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America and Targeting Guns, Kleck reports that firearms are used defensively 2.5 millions times per year, dwarfing offensive uses by criminals. Kleck says that 25 to 75 lives are saved by guns for every life lost by a gun. The medical costs saved by the defensive use of guns are 15 times greater than the costs caused by criminal use of firearms, according to Kleck.

Of course depression is the major culprit, but what if we put the focus on successful suicide? Many people attempt suicide with pills, or by cutting their wrists, etc., and are rescued. A bullet, however, is quick and final.

No second chances for those people that attempt suicide with a gun. Sometimes a suicide attempt is a call for help, at least if its done with pills or other means, there is a chance that person might be able to get that call answered and get the help they really do need. No second chance with a gun however.

Fact: A firearm will be available to protect you significantly faster than police will be able to arrive.

Fact: In the case your family is attacked, a firearm is your best hope for self defense.

Fact: A properly stored firearm, owned by a responsible and properly trained adult is perfectly safe.

Fact: Attempts to restrict handguns leads to higher crime. (Washington, DC is an excellent example.)

I find these facts rather tenuous.

Fact: A firearm will be available to protect you significantly faster than police will be able to arrive.

Self-defence is meant to be proportionate to the action taken by the attacker. Bu taking the law into your own hands the chances are you will commit the greater crime and aggravate the situation.

Fact: In the case your family is attacked, a firearm is your best hope for self defense.

The chances of you and your family being attacked at random are so small their hardly worth considering compared to other threats such as driving a car or crossing the road.

Fact: A properly stored firearm, owned by a responsible and properly trained adult is perfectly safe

.
Sure its true a firearm is perfectly safe if its locked away in a display case and is their for display only and is not loaded.

Fact: Attempts to restrict handguns leads to higher crime. (Washington, DC is an excellent example.)

Washington DC might well be the only example but i am remain unconvinced that their is a direct correlation with the removal of guns and an increase in crime.

"Self-defence is meant to be proportionate to the action taken by the attacker. Bu taking the law into your own hands the chances are you will commit the greater crime and aggravate the situation."

Self defense is a right, not vigilanteism.

"The chances of you and your family being attacked at random are so small their hardly worth considering compared to other threats such as driving a car or crossing the road."

Do you look both ways before crossing the road, or buckle your seatbelt when you drive your car?
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

"Sure its true a firearm is perfectly safe if its locked away in a display case and is their for display only and is not loaded."

A firearm is safe as long as there isn't a finger on the trigger. Keep the gun out of the reach of child-sized fingers and those uneducated in firearm safety, and there is no danger whatsoever. I've slept within arms reach of a handgun and a shotgun for years, and suprise suprise, they haven't shot a single person!

"Washington DC might well be the only example but i am remain unconvinced that their is a direct correlation with the removal of guns and an increase in crime."

It probably doesn't increase crime. But you have to admit that gun restrictions only effect people that abide by the law, and a disarmed populace gives criminals the advantage. Murderers, rapists, muggers and carjackers fear an armed populace, not the police.

Fact: A good friend of mine had a psychotic break during a med change. Reached under the bed and took the handgun that his wife had asked him not to buy for protection. He shot her 4 times thinking she was trying to attack their unborn baby. He attempted Suicide when he realized what he did, major head trauma.

Fact: 2 people dead, 1 good friend torn for life with anxiety, guilt, PTSD, fear and terrible scarring.

In some cases they can work, in other the results are pretty horrible.

Clearly there will never be agreement on this issue. And gun control? Ain't gonna happen. I do wish more could/would be done to keep guns out off the hands of kids and teens.
